Buganda Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, has confirmed plans to engage the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) following feedback from a nationwide public poll on the Uganda Cranes. The aim is to address concerns over the team’s performance, identity, and connection with fans.
The poll showed:
- Keep the name Uganda Cranes: 52%
- Change the name: 32%
- Introduce national team colours: 22%
- Adopt a national football anthem: 48%
- Remove government agencies from the Uganda Premier League: 46%
Mayiga stated: “I will formally present these proposals to FUFA to strengthen the team’s identity and inspire both players and supporters.”
He noted that identity and structure play a key role in the team’s motivation, highlighting that the current nickname and lack of fixed national colours may limit fan connection. Mayiga also emphasized the importance of community-backed clubs to develop players capable of excelling internationally.
